Today’s headlines

The U.S. stock market dropped 1,700 points today, a $2 trillion value.  This is the largest drop since the pandemic.

This is THE direct result of Trump’s idea that tariffs will make the United States rich.

If you agree with him, maybe you should read a book on history or on economics or maybe just browse the internet for what the experts are saying.

As far as I can tell, all educated experts are calling this action insane.

Those on Trump’s staff are saying, “Don’t listen to the experts.  We should trust Donald Trump’s instincts.”  I assume they are referring to the same instincts that drove a casino into bankruptcy.

Interestingly, Shawn Fain, the president of the United Auto Workers is suddenly a big Trump fan.  He mistakenly believes that automakers will now create tens of thousands of high-paying auto worker jobs in the United States.

I would bet my house that not a single automaker job will be created.  Fewer cars will be sold and therefore fewer will be built as the estimated impact of tariffs on the price increase of a new car is in the $6,000 to $10,000 range.  Not to mention that even if car manufacturers wanted to build new factories in the United States, it would take years and billions of dollars.  The foundation wouldn’t even be in place by the time Trump’s term is over and the tariffs are taken away.

By the way,  Congress has the power to turn off the tariffs.  It just takes a simple majority.  The Senate already passed such a motion to stop the Canadian tariffs. The next step is for the House to approve the measure.

Here is the catch.  Any measure can be brought before the House and they must act on it within 15 days.  Now, to keep this from happening, the House has passed a bill stating that an entire session of Congress, one that ends at the end of the year, will be recognized as only lasting one day.  This means that 15 days will never pass so the House will never have to vote against Trump.

In other news, Elon Musk seems surprised that any judge can tell Trump he has to follow the law.  Elon needs to study the balance of power created by our 3 branches of government in the Constitution.  It is their very job to make sure Trump follows the law.  That is why they exist.

Elon is also complaining that an election for a Supreme Court judge in Wisconsin was stolen.  His evidence:  He spent tens of millions of dollars trying to get the other guy elected.

There is a book out that claims Elon Musk is of average intelligence.  He started companies and sold them but the underlaying intellectual property of those companies did not originate with him.  For example, he took over Tesla, he didn’t invent electric cars.  Not a day goes by when I have to question if Musk’s intellect is as high as an average person’s.

If you voted for Trump; if you voted for a Republican in Congress…

This is all on you.

The Trouble with DOGE

Department of Government Efficiency…sounds good, right?

Who doesn’t want to either pay less on taxes or at least get more for the taxes you do pay?

But..is DOGE really doing what it claims to be doing?

This is how they operate….

  1. A team of 20-something year olds go into a government agency and look for inefficiencies.
  2. This team appears to be made up of programming people.
  3. After a couple of days, this team declares that by eliminating X% of the workforce, they can save billions of dollars.
  4. Since they only want to eliminate waste or unproductive people, they carve out the newest employees and send them on their way.
  5. Final step…publicize a great success

Let’s stop and think about this for a minute.  Let’s just slow it down.

Recall the last time you got a new job or a new position at an existing workplace.  How long did it take you to fully understand what your job was?

If your job is to pick lettuce, you may have caught on pretty quickly.  Here is how deep I dig to get the roots.   Remember to lift with my legs and not my back.  If I stack 3 before loading them into a bag I can go faster.  Every job has things to learn.

If your job is to manage a team of salespeople for a product you have never heard of before, it may take longer.  In fact, it could take weeks, months or even years before you are able to say, “I know my job inside and our.”

That is just for one job.

Now imagine a bunch of DOGE kids bursting into a giant, decades old social service organization with tens of thousands of employees.  How many centuries would it take for them to fully understand the value of each and every job?  The idea that in a couple of days, they have it all figured out is simply nonsensical.

What I think they are doing is grabbing a payroll spreadsheet and sorting the names by date of hire.  Next to each name is an annual salary.  They start and the bottom and add up the salaries as they go up the spreadsheet.  They stop when they have highlighted enough salaries to justify a savings.  For example, if we fire the most junior10,000 employees, we will reduce payroll by $850 million per year.  That’s almost 10 billion over10 years.

Let’s do that and claim $10 billion in savings and then move on to the next building.

I have spent the last 35 years of my career working with companies to help them become more efficient.  These are large companies that make pharmaceuticals, or semiconductors or cars.  They might be in mining or transportation or manufacturing.  They might have as few as 100 employees or as many as 100,000.

In all of that time, I have not once found that the best way to lower costs was to reduce payroll.

Not one single time.

The reason for this is that companies, profit and non-profit, do not have a high tolerance for paying people to stand around.

People at a company to do one thing…add value.  If they weren’t adding value, they wouldn’t be there.

Yes, you can have lazy people and hard workers but on the whole…people add value in their job position or they would be let go.

If you understand this, then you understand why reducing payroll is almost never the best way to become more efficient.

Let’s take an example…

Suppose I went to a company that makes Electric Vehicles.  I could go into that plant and say, “Let’s fire 25% of your workforce and save $10 million a year.”  Sounds great, right!

However, now we don’t have the maintenance people we need to keep the machines running.  There are not enough people to paint the cars or install batteries.  There is not enough programs to keep all of the automation in sync.  The air conditioner breaks down and people start to get sick and equipment overhears.  Trucks are lined up to deliver parts but no one is there to check them in or unload them.

The company saved $10 million a year by cutting productivity down to nothing.

And, did I really save $10 million a year?  Those people I fired will get some severance.  They will files lawsuits.  This will become a public affair nightmare.  These fired employees will start to collect unemployment and stop paying taxes.  They will stop paying rent, and buying TV’s and new clothes.

In short, my random firings cut valuable services needed for production without saving all that much money and even adding to the social welfare burden caused by the newly unemployed.

This is what DOGE is doing.

Yes…the idea is grand.  The execution is going to disrupt our economy for generations.

Where are we today

My last post was about tariffs, and I thought I had put that issue to bed for the time being…but I was wrong.

Tomorrow, April 2nd, is what Trump is calling Liberation Day.  I don’t know why but its catchy and his followers will cling to any soundbite that rings of patriotism.

What he plans on doing that day appears to be putting tariffs on just about everyone in the world.  No one knows why but Trump thinks this will make American great again.  Virtually all economists agree that Being Great is the same thing as Being in a Self-Induced recession and dragging the entire world economy along with you.

Trump thinks that if he makes it too expensive to import car parts, companies will drop everything and spend billions to make their car parts in the United States.  Ask yourself, “Would I spend billions based on the passing whim of someone without an understanding of economics?  This same someone that changes his mind based on the direction his hemorrhoids are pointing in the morning.”

In the United States, there is complete uncertainty about what is going to happen today, tomorrow, and the next day.  There is no endgame.  There is no goal.  Canada recently said, “We have no idea why he is imposing these tariffs, so we don’t know what we are supposed to do to appease him.”

Meanwhile, our closest friends and allies are turning their backs on us.  I’m referring to Canada, Mexico, and the entire European Union.

Instead, Trump is aligning us with Russia and North Korea.

After 2 months, our economy is in a shambles.

After 2 months, our military allies have decided that we cannot be trusted.

After 2 months, it has become normal for people to be swept off the streets by masked men and put into vans then shipped off to who-knows-where without any due process.

After 2 months it has become acceptable for the president of the United States to declare he does not have to follow the rulings of our courts.

After 2 months it has become normal for the president to tell the Smithsonian that it cannot have displays that show slavery existed in the United States.

After 2 months, it is now legal for the U.S. Government to discriminate based on the color of your skin.

After 2 months, it has become normal for Trump’s biggest campaign donor to do a NAZI salute at a Republican event and then go on to slash one government agency after another.

After 2 months there is no longer anything abnormal about the president firing the District Attorney who is investigating a major Trump donor.

After 2 months it is normal for Trump to have already spent more than $30 million on golf trips for himself.

After 2 months it is normal for cabinet members to discuss secret military plans, in detail, on a public and nonsecure app.

None of this is normal.

It is time to resist.

About Tariffs

A tariff is a tax placed on goods imported from one country into another.

The purpose is to raise the cost of the imported goods.

Countries do this to protect domestic businesses from foreign competition.  By making foreign products more expensive, the domestic product can match or even beat the price of the imported product.

In economic theory, all other things being equal, the product with the lowest price is the one that consumers will buy.

Here is how it works…

Let’s say India has invented a new medical device.  Each of these devices takes hundreds of labor hours to be put together.  India can build one of these devices for $1,000.  The United States wants to get in the market of building this device.  The problem is that the cost of labor in the United States is far higher than that in India so when we build the product, it costs us $1,500.  In other words, our product costs 50% more than the identical product built in India.

In the U.S., the decision is made to impose a 50% tariff on the Indian product.  This means that when the product is imported from India, the company that imported it, probably a local retailer, will have to pay an additional 50% just for the privilege of importing it.

The importing company will then pass this new cost along to the end user (consumer).  So now, you can find both the product from the United States and the product from India sitting side-by-side on a shelf; both selling for $1,500.

Trump calls this 50% tariff a windfall.  He implies that India is paying the U.S. government a tax when it fact, they are not.  The importer pays the higher amount but in the end, even he is not paying the tax.  The “tax” is paid when the consumer, who used to by the product for $1,000 now pays, $1,500.  No one other than the consumer paid this tax.

Trump says we will get so much money from Tariffs that he will be able to eliminate income tax.  Theoretically this is true.  If tariffs raise the cost of consumer goods so much that the income from tariffs, which is paid by the consumer, can cover all income needed from income tax, then you could eliminate income tax.

Another way of saying this is that if you pay $20,000 more a year for goods because of tariffs, you should see your income tax bill go down by $20,000.  Do you really care?  $20,000 is $20,000 no matter how the government collects it.

So, why does Trump not tell you the whole story?

I have two theories.  The first is that he thinks you are too dumb to understand how tariffs work.

The second theory is that he is too dumb to understand how tariffs work.

I’ll leave you with this thought…

Late Professor William T. Kelley taught Marketing at Wharton School of Business and Finance, University of Pennsylvania, for 31 years, ending with his retirement in 1982.  Dr. Kelley, who also had vast experience as a business consultant, was the author of a then-widely used textbook called Marketing Intelligence — The Management of Marketing Information (originally published by P. Staples, London, 1968).  Dr. Kelley taught marketing management to both undergraduate and graduate students at Wharton.

Professor Kelley said  “Donald Trump was the dumbest goddam student I ever had.”

Just sayin…

Everyday feels like an episode of Jerry Springer when Trump is in charge

Today’s scandal is about Leaked information

Here is what happened:

Senior Trump officials were using a known non-secure phone app to discuss a military strike.

The use of this app…Signal…has one single advantage, it is secured in a way that your conversations on it cannot be collected as they should be by law.  In other words, you can talk about stuff and then later deny it because no one has access to it…unless you are a Russian hacker who is known to have breached the app’s security

An American journalist was somehow added to the chat, including things like weapons and the timing of a pending attack.  It also included trash talk about our European allies.

Trump’s CIA, Intelligence, and military top officials claimed nothing classified was on the chat. This allowed the journalist to safely publish the chat which clearly showed it was All about classified information

My problems with this:

  1. Don’t use chat because your official conversations belong to the public and the public can’t get them from Signal
  2. Don’t lie to Congress and say “There was no classified information” because there was.
  3. Trump, faced with one of the largest scandals of his career said something like, “I don’t even know what you’re talking about, and if I did it was no big deal.”
  4. The overall ineptness and lying are standard fare for Trump.  Our Ex-European allies have taken notice of this and are no longer willing to share some sensitive information with us simply because They No Longer Trust Us.

Trump, when finally cornered said, “This was the first minor slip-up in an otherwise perfect first 2 months of my administration.”  In response to this Rachael Maddow lists how the first two months were “not quite perfect.”

My name is Jim.

I’ve created this website knowing that I have to do
something about this Trump administration.

I’m not a protester by nature.  I’m not an anarchist.  I’m not a guy that thinks “So long as my team
wins, everything is justified.”

I just know that I can no longer sit at my dinning table
watching the evening news and think, “Why isn’t someone doing something about
the clown car known as Donald Trump.”

So I have a plan.
More of a seed of a plan.

I’m going to post videos pointing out the variety of ways
that Trump is ruining our country.

I’m going to set things up so that you can comment.

While I am looking for like-minded people, I am certainly
open to conversations that point our where I am wrong.  I even appreciate a good argument that
actually changes my mind.

But first, I need to find my voice.

What am I going to say?
How am I going to say it?

How can I get others involved?  How often should I post something?

Should I also do a podcast or streaming?  Should I have guests that come on and discuss
or even argue issues with me?

I need to find my voice and this video is the first step.

Please feel free to post in the comment section below.  I’ll make sure everyone visiting this site
sees what you write.  I will only delete
comments that are non-sensical or clearly antagonistic for the sake of being
antagonistic.

Feel free to join the Resistance…whatever that may mean..
